What is the difference between natural and lab-grown diamonds?

Natural diamonds formed over billions of years beneath the earth's surface under intense heat and pressure. Lab-grown diamonds are physically, chemically, and optically identical — they are real diamonds, not simulants like cubic zirconia or moissanite. The only difference is their origin.

Lab-grown diamonds are typically 50–70% less expensive than equivalent natural diamonds and are an increasingly popular choice among environmentally conscious buyers.

Natural diamonds, however, have higher long-term resale value and are preferred by collectors and those who value rarity.

What makes a ruby "pigeon blood" and why is it more valuable?

"Pigeon blood" is a term used in the trade to describe the finest quality rubies — those exhibiting a pure, vivid red with a slight blue undertone, resembling the first two drops of blood from a freshly killed pigeon (a traditional Burmese description). The color is neither too dark nor too light, with excellent saturation and strong fluorescence under UV light.

Pigeon blood rubies are almost exclusively found in the Mogok Valley of Myanmar (Burma) and command significant premiums over ordinary red rubies — sometimes 5–10x more for equivalent carat weight.

Do gemstones require special care?

Yes — different gemstones have different hardness levels (measured on the Mohs scale) and require different care:

Diamonds (Mohs 10): Very durable. Clean with warm water, mild soap, and a soft brush. Store separately as diamonds can scratch other stones.

Rubies & Sapphires (Mohs 9): Durable for daily wear. Avoid harsh chemicals and steam cleaning for treated stones.

Emeralds (Mohs 7.5–8): More brittle than rubies/sapphires due to natural inclusions. Avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaners. Oil treatments (standard practice) can be affected by solvents.

Alexandrite, Tourmaline, Spinel (Mohs 7.5–8): Relatively durable. Clean gently with warm soapy water.

Yes. If you have a gemstone you would like set into a piece of jewelry, we can design and manufacture the setting. Please bring or send your stone to us first for evaluation so we can design a setting appropriate for its dimensions, weight, and character.

We take full responsibility for stones in our custody and will return your stone mounted and insured. Please note that we cannot be held responsible for pre-existing damage, cracks, or inclusions revealed during the setting process.

Can you engrave jewelry?

Yes. We offer hand and laser engraving services on rings, bracelets, and pendants. Popular engravings include initials, dates, coordinates, and short messages (up to 30 characters for most pieces).
